Batu Pahat town is the capital of the Batu Pahat district in Johor, Malaysia. Its origins date back to 1892, when local mayors of villages around the area went to Sultan Abu Bakar, ruler of Johor during the time, to ask for permission to establish a township in Batu Pahat. It was believed that Batu Pahat may emulate the success of Muar during the time. Simpang Kanan, near the Batu Pahat river bay was then chosen as the spot for this new township.

Today, Batu Pahat is one of the largest cities in the southern state, with a population of more than 468,000 in the entire district. Most of its residents remain concentrated in the Simpang Kanan area where it all began, being the most populated are in the district with a population of more than 250,000.

Batu Pahat is one of the state’s most well-known industrial towns, with the manufacturing sector providing the bulk of economic activities. Food-processing, textiles, electronics, plastic, porcelain and timber are some of the main industries in the district. Agriculture is also another important source of resource for Batu Pahat, with several of the largest plantations in the state bearing rubber, palm oil, coconut, and cocoa, while fruit plantations are also aplenty.

Being a highly established town, there are countless amenities catering to its strong population. Within the capital of Batu Pahat are shopping malls like Batu Pahat Mall, the Square One Mall, and The Summit Batu Pahat, while commercial shop lots all over town provide everything from banks to mini markets, clinics and pharmacies, eateries, restaurants, automotive repair shops, and more.

Batu Pahat town is also home to a number of hospitals, namely the Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital, the Putra Specialist Hospital, and the Pantai Specialist Hospital. To meet the demands of its population, there are hundreds of primary and secondary schools and higher learning institutions in Batu Pahat. Being a majority Chinese locale, there are also about 38 Chinese primary schools and several Chinese independent schools, such as the Chinese High School (Batu Pahat). Tertiary education institutions include 2 polytechnics, the Tun Hussein Onn University of Malaysia (UTHM), and the Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Tun Hussein Onn (IPGKTHO) teachers’ training college.

Muar is located 50km northwest of Batu Pahat, where Kluang is situated northeast of it approximately 52km away, followed by Pontian on the southeast and Segamat on the north. Johor Bahru is about 130km from Batu Pahat. In terms of accessibility, there are several major routes which connect the different parts of Batu Pahat to one another, as well as other towns and cities of Johor. Federal Route 50, also known as Jalan Batu Pahat-Kluang-Mersing, stretches from the Batu Pahat city centre to the North-South Expressway (NSE), and westwards to the towns of Kluang (53.4km) and Mersing (140km). The NSE links northwards to towns like Yong Peng, and southwards to Skudai and Johor Bahru. Federal Route 24, or Jalan Muar-Yong Peng, also runs through the northwest of the district.
