About Tanjung Tokong

Properties for Sale in Tanjung Tokong

Tanjung Tokong is a matured neighbourhood occupying the northeastern corner of the Penang Island. It began as a fishing village, deriving its name from an old Chinese temple built in the late 18th century. During the 1970s and 1980s the area started to see development, mainly a result of its relative proximity to Georgetown.

The neighbourhood is a popular place to stay in, especially for those working in Georgetown. Developments in the area range from low- and medium-cost apartments and affordable housing settlements to upmarket sea-facing condominiums, and landed houses by the sea and on the hills of Tanjung Tokong. Massive land reclamation was (and is still being) done along the northern shore of the area, becoming the site for the new homes and commercial complexes of Seri Tanjung Pinang.

Tanjung Tokong is home to Penang's first shopping centre, Island Plaza. Since then, many other shopping complexes have sprung up in the neighbourhood and the surrounding areas, for example Gurney Plaza, Gurney Paragon and Straits Quay, where residents can access an abundance of eateries, shops, beauty parlours, health and fitness centres, cinemas and recreational spaces.

The Mount Erskine market, Tesco Seri Tanjung Pinang and Sam's Groceria in Straits Quay cater for the residents' grocery shopping needs. Medical facilities are also aplenty, with the Adventist Medical Centre, Penang Adventist Hospital and Gleneagles Penang Medical Center all located about 3 to 6km away from Tanjung Tokong.

There are several schools and education centres located within the vicinity of Tanjung Tokong – public institutions like SJK (C) Hun Bin and SK Tanjung Tokong, and private ones like Kumon, Smart Reader and various kindergartens. The town is also considerably near to the Georgetown city (about 7km from Komtar), where many other educational institutions can be found, such as Penang Chinese Girls' High School, Equator College, Pusat Teknologi dan Pengurusan Lanjut (PTPL) and KDU Penang University College.

Public transportation in the form of buses, including 101, 102, 103 and 104, is available along the main road, Jalan Tanjung Tokong, as well as along some other smaller roads like Jalan Gajah and Jalan Bintang. Those living in other parts of Tanjung Tokong that are further away from the main road, however, would need to walk quite a long way to get to a bus stop, or simply need to own their own private vehicles.
