Gelugor is a prosperous little township that overlooks the sea and is situated by the Penang Bridge. It is neighboured by Jelutong, Bukit Jambul and Bayan Baru, some of the most popular townships on the island. Named after a plant species (asam gelugor), Gelugor is a rather old township that came into existence in the 1960s. The hilly areas within Gelugor are referred to as Bukit Gelugor.

Gelugor was originally an agricultural land owned by David Brown - one of the largest landowners in Penang until his passing in 1825. The land was reserved for planting coconut trees and herding cows, and the estate was worked on by Indians and various other estate workers. Its origins have however faded into the past, and precious few of it is still evident. The biggest remaining legacy of David Brown is Kampung Buah Pala - an Indian village.

Despite the rapid development in town, there are however still a great number of older buildings in the inner areas, interspersed with newer developments closer to the town centre. The township nevertheless still remains a quiet and serene one, that comprises mainly of residential neighbourhoods.

The main road that serves Gelugor is Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, a main trunk road on the island of Penang. Residents of Gelugor hence enjoy easy access to the main highway, Lebuhraya Tun Dr. Lim Chong Eu. With the convenience of accessibility, Georgetown is only 15 minutes away and the Penang Bridge is literally a 5-minute drive away.

As the main trunk road of Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah is a main artery on the island, residents of Gelugor enjoy access to the many different public busses. The Rapid Penang busses number 102, 206, 301, 302, 303, 304 and 401 travels through the town via the aforementioned trunk road.

Some of the local favourite hangout places in town is the Taman Rekreasi Jabatan Laut which is a public park, and then there is the Poh Guat Keong temple. The temple is not one of the most popular tourist attractions, but it is one that is preferred by the locals.

Being a very established township with great infrastructure and easy accessibility to town, Gelugor is certainly a favourite place for homebuyers. The prices of new homes here are still considered to be affordable, and the upcoming newer developments in the town offers more choices.
