Lebuh Melayu, also known as Malay Street, is a stretch of double-storey pre-war shophouses located in the inner city of Georgetown, Penang. Historically, the street had gotten its name from times when it was merely a path which ran along a village where Malays and Acehnese people had settled long ago. Beach Street sits at one end of Lebuh Melayu while Lebuh Carnorvan is located on the other. The street is also on the border between the UNESCO Heritage Site Core Zone and Buffer Zone. As such, several of the pre-war shophouses along the road have been refurbished and repurposed as guesthouses and eateries, though the street remains quiet, with many of the older businesses still in operation. Amenities along Lebuh Melayu are only limited to a few eateries, however, its location close to the city ensure easy reach of any conveniences required. Shopping malls such as Prangin Mall and Times Square Penang are just down Lebuh Carnarvon while there is also a Pacific supermarket in the area. Lebuh Melayu is located close to popular streets like Lebuh Kimberly, Jalan Cheong Fatt Tze, Pengkalan Weld, as well as the many attractions. The street holds potential in investment for businesses such as quiet boutique hotels and homey restaurants, as much of the traffic and tourists are cramped in the more central part of the core zone.
