About Jelutong

Properties for Sale in Jelutong

Jelutong is one of the most popular districts on the island of Penang. It is a town that is named after the Jelutong hardwood tree which can grow up to 70 metres tall. Unfortunately non of these trees exist in this township anymore.

Jelutong is a satellite town of Georgetown hence its proximity to the capital of Penang. It is neighboured by Georgetown to its east and Air Itam to the west. The main trunk road of the district is Jalan Jelutong, which is accessible to Lebuhraya Tun Dr. Lim Chong Eu. Being the satellite town of Georgetown, the capital is only 10 minutes away. As such, residents of Jelutong also enjoy the complete array of amenities available in the city.

If there is one thing that Jelutong is famous for, it is its night market which is better known as ‘pasar malam’ to the locals. The night market is located on the Van Praagh Road, and opens every Friday night from evenings onwards. Unlike the pasar malams located in the Klang Valley which are famous for their electronics and clothes, the ones in Penang are popular for their food.

Jelutong is touted to have one of the best pasar malams in Penang aside from the one in Farlim, and has an unbelievable array of food. From sugar cane juice to asam laksa and char kway kak to grilled sweet corn, they have it all. Some of their more popular fare are the spicy fried squid rings, bubble tea and oyster see sua. There is so much food here, that it is not unusual for visitors to eat themselves into a food coma.

Quite a number of busses serve the Jelutong neighbourhood, from the local bus service provider Rapid Penang. Passing through the main trunk road Jalan Jelutong are busses number 11, 301, 302, 303, 401 and 704.

This quiet little town comprises a mix of old pre-war structures and modern high rises. While it is the satellite town of Georgetown, it still has a number of quiet little spots. Driving to the mainland of Penang from Jelutong will take about 20 minutes in clear traffic, while the Penang International Airport is also approximately 20 minutes away.
