Nibong Tebal is a big town located in Penang Mainland, close to the border between Penang and Perak. It is home to the Bukit Panchor Industrial Estate and the Nibong Tebal Industrial Park. With its blend of industrial areas and educational institutions, and the considerably short distance to the Batu Kawan industrial area and the Second Penang Bridge leading to the Penang Island, Nibong Tebal is getting increased attention from developers, particularly in the recent years.

The healthy student population in Nibong Tebal is largely due to a Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) campus in Transkrian, Nibong Tebal. Befitting the town's proximity to one of the main manufacturing and industrial hubs in Penang, the campus houses the engineering schools, namely in the fields of aerospace engineering, civil engineering, chemical engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, materials and mineral resources engineering and mechanical engineering. The school of languages is also located in the same campus.

In addition to the USM campus, the Institut Kemahiran Tinggi PERDA (PERDA-TECH) and Institut Latihan Perindustrian (ILP) Arumugam Pillai are also situated in Nibong Tebal. The latter is a public educational facility managed by the governmental Human Resource Department, that provides courses related with the printing industry, graphic technology, digital media and electrical technology.

Residents of Nibong Tebal have access to many amenities, such as clinics, places of worship, banks, convenience stores, kindergartens and schools – SJK (C) Pai Teik, SMK Seri Nibong, SMK Tunku Abdul Rahman, SMK Sungai Acheh, SK Nibong Tebal, as well as SMK Panglima Bukit Gantang, SK Baru Parit Buntar, SMJK Krian, SK Methodist and SMK Methodist in the nearby town of Parit Buntar. Located about 6km or 10 minutes away, Parit Buntar is also home to several supermarkets, a hospital and the Kerian Sentral Mall that houses a Lotus Five Star cinema.

Nibong Tebal can be accessed from other states of Peninsular Malaysia via the Jawi interchange of the North-South Expressway (NSE), as well as the Nibong Tebal KTM station. Within the town, Rapid Penang buses 801, 802 and 803 pass through the main roads of Jalan Baru and Jalan Perrmatang Tinggi, terminating their journeys at the Nibong Tebal Bus Terminal.

Consumer Price Index

This is a representation of Penang Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the year of 2011 - 2015

Did you know?

A consumer price index (CPI) measures changes in the price level of a market basket of consumer goods and services purchased by households. (Wikipedia)

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) line shows an increment in prices of essential goods on a yearly basis, while the Percentage Changes line shows the level of changes in price increments over the years. For example, a dip in the CPI line may indicate a low level of price increment as compared to the previous year while a surge in CPI line shows a high level of price increment as compared to the previous year.

The above graph shows 1.742% of price changes in essential goods such as rice, meat and tobacco between the years 2011 and 2012, while increasing in difference to 2.093% in 2013. Prices of essential goods then increasing to 3.169% in the year 2014 while surging by 2.529% in 2015.

While the prices of essential goods have shown a variation in the Percentage Changes, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) on the other hand indicates a reality of ever increasing prices in essential goods with increments between the years 2011 - 2015 at 102.7 in 2011, 105.1 in 2012, 107.3 in 2013, 110.7 in 2014, 113.5 in 2015.
