Muar town is the capital of the Muar district, located in the southern state of Johor. It is one of the largest cities in Johor, coming after Johor Bahru, Batu Pahat, and Kluang. The Muar district used to be much larger, spanning the entire northern region which borders the state of Malacca. However, in 2008, the Tangkak sub-district was upgraded to district status in its own right, separating from the Muar District.

The city is historically rich, tracing back to the Malacca Sultanate, with some sources stating it was even earlier. The modern town of Muar was officiated in 1887, which also saw the conferring of the “Bandar DiRaja” title, and was subsequently given the name of Bandar Maharani, due to its prominent status at the time. These days, Muar remains an important city, and is famous for its furniture and agriculture industries, and is a must-visit destination for tourists to the state.

Given its long-time establishment, amenities are aplenty within Muar. Shopping malls in the city include the Wetex Parade, Astaka Shopping Centre, as well as hypermarkets like a Giant, an Econsave, TF Value Mart, Fresh and Convenient Store (Fresco), as well as the Nafas Mall where fresh agricultural produce can be found. Medical facilities are also available at the numerous hospitals in the city, of which encompass the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital, and the KPJ Muar Specialist Hospital.

There is a great choice of national schools like SK St. Andrew, SK Ismail 1, SMK Sri Muar, SMK Bandar Maharani, as well as Chinese independent schools like Chung Hwa High School and Pei Hwa High School. In addition, the Pagoh Education Hub plan will also see the establishment of 4 local universities, namely Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), International Islamic University Malaysia (UIAM), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Politeknik Pagoh.

Accessibility wise, Muar is within reach of the North-South Expressway (NSE) through the Tangkak and Pagoh exits of the NSE. The Lebuhraya Alor Gajah-Melaka Tengah-Jasin, better known as Lebuh AMJ, also connects Muar to the state of Malacca, where the city centre is about an hour’s drive away. When it comes to other forms of transportation, busses going to other parts of Johor and the Malaysian peninsula can be found at the 2 bus stations in the city, namely Hentian Maharani and Bentayan Express Bus Station (known as Pagoh Bus Station before this).

The closest Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) station can be found in Segamat, approximately an hour’s drive away. However, the High Speed Rail (HSR) between Malaysia and Singapore will see a transit station in Muar, which will enable increased rail connectivity. Muar is also the only other place, besides from Johor Bahru, which has its own Custom and Excise Duty Department office and checkpoint for travellers departing and coming from Dumai, Sumatra, Indonesia by ferry.
