Kedah, Malaysia

Neighbourhood Review

Bukit Kayu Hitam is a town in Kedah located at the border between Malaysia and Thailand. Placed at the northern tip of the North-South Expressway, the town’s location marks the end of the longest Malaysian road from Johor Bahru which connects with Thailand Route 4 in Dannok. A checkpoint and duty-free shopping complex owned by Quintmas Sdn Bhd is situated near the border with a golf course located behind the duty-free shopping complex.

Bukit Kayu Hitam is mainly a point for people to cross the border from Malaysia into Thailand and vice versa. A large portion of the economic industry in Bukit Kayu Hitam is in logistics where the industrial estate is set to expand in order to attract more logistics companies to the fore. There are also plans by the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) to develop Bukit Kayu Hitam and turn it into a tourist destination due to its border placement between Malaysia and Thailand.

Due to its rather strategic location, there are concerns of crime and safety of the residents living in the town. Constant security checks have to be made to ensure that there are no serious incidents occurring. The Border Intelligence Unit at the Malaysian-Thai border has been organised by the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman to ensure the safety of the residents living in the town and to fight against cross-border crime.

Consumer Price Index

This is a representation of Kedah Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the year of 2011 - 2015

Did you know?

A consumer price index (CPI) measures changes in the price level of a market basket of consumer goods and services purchased by households. (Wikipedia)

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) line shows an increment in prices of essential goods on a yearly basis, while the Percentage Changes line shows the level of changes in price increments over the years. For example, a dip in the CPI line may indicate a low level of price increment as compared to the previous year while a surge in CPI line shows a high level of price increment as compared to the previous year.

The above graph shows 1.746% of price changes in essential goods such as rice, meat and tobacco between the years 2011 and 2012, while increasing in difference to 2.193% in 2013. Prices of essential goods then increasing to 2.892% in the year 2014 while surging by 1.995% in 2015.

While the prices of essential goods have shown a variation in the Percentage Changes, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) on the other hand indicates a reality of ever increasing prices in essential goods with increments between the years 2011 - 2015 at 102.7 in 2011, 104.9 in 2012, 107.2 in 2013, 110.3 in 2014, 112.5 in 2015.
