Ayer Hitam is a sub-district of the Batu Pahat District in Malaysia’s southernmost state, Johor. It is not to be confused for another town on the Penang island, which bears a similar name, Air Itam. It is believed that the town of Ayer Hitam got its name back in the early 20th century, from the dark waters which flowed down from the hills to the rivers and channels around. Before that, it was actually known as Simpang Pulai, similar to another town in Perak.

Ayer Hitam is well-known for its many outlets which sell pottery and other ceramic crafts, which has been the highlight for tourism to the area. Visitors also come to the town to savour the opportunity to watch potters at work.

Ayer Hitam is a bustling town, thanks to its location at the intersection of Federal Route 1 and Federal Route 50. Federal Route 1 is the old trunk road which connects north and south of peninsula Malaysia, while Route 50 links Batu Pahat in the west to Kluang and Mersing on the east. As such, cars and people frequently pass through the town during their journey up and down the peninsula, to and from places like Kuala Lumpur and Malacca, heading to Johor Bahru and neighbouring Singapore. There is also an interchange to the North-South Expressway (NSE), which is the newer route to the north and south.

With that, Ayer Hitam offers a range of amenities and shops selling everything from ceramic ware and souvenirs to local confectionaries, as well as restaurants and food stalls for hungry travellers to stopover for a bite. Other amenities in town are the Masjid Sultan Ibrahim and the Klinik Kesihatan Ayer Hitam, while public transportation such as express busses can be found at the Ayer Hitam bus terminal.
