Sungai Bakap is located in the mainland of Penang, and is part of the South Seberang Perai District. The area is considered rural in a state that is slowly being consumed by urbanisation, and is populated mostly by oil palm plantations. Prior to this, Sungai Bakap was well known to be part of a large sugar plantation, developed by Khaw Loh Hup, a sugar pioneer in the 1800s.
