Setapak is a suburb of Kuala Lumpur which is known to be densely populated and heavily congested at all times. While originally a tin mining area cum rubber tree plantation in the 1880s, Setapak is now a bustling hub of activity which never sleeps.
As Setapak is a matured suburb of Kuala Lumpur, the area is filled with houses that are significantly aged. The homes that are found here are usually on the tired side, and in need of refurbishment.
Additionally, it has been reported that Setapak has an exceptionally high crime rate and one of the high profile cases that occurred here is the murder of Nurin Jazlin in 2007. With several institutes of higher education such as the Tunku Abdul Rahman University (UTAR) within its vicinity, Setapak has a higher than average number of students.
Despite Setapak already being a densely populated suburb, the government has proposed to built 800 units of affordable homes under the PR1MA scheme. Nevertheless, Setapak is generally a choice location for those looking to rent out their homes to the constant flow of students who study at the local university.
While Setapak was an area that used to have a limited number of connecting roads to the city in the past, it now has many new roads which connects to main, if usually congested highways, such as the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) and the Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE).
