5 factors that can affect your internet experience 1

Imagine this - you’re happily scrolling through PropSocial, you find what you like, but you can’t seem to watch the developer’s video because it keeps on buffering. Frustrating, isn’t it?

There are a number of factors that can have an impact on your Internet experience like your Internet service provider or how your Internet is set up at home. We’ll go through these factors and give you some tips on how to make the most of your Internet experience.

1. Choice of WiFi router

Your WiFi router plays an important role in ensuring your Internet connection remains fast and reliable. This is crucial especially with the influx of smart mobile devices, Internet-enabled appliances, and the number of devices sharing the same home Internet connection.

Check your hardware to make sure that it’s capable of delivering the speeds you’ve subscribed to. Look for dual-band routers with 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz to provide better bandwidth with 2 networks running at the same time.

2. Objects that interfere with your WiFi signal

You may not realise it but common household appliances like your microwave, TV or even your water heater can affect the strength of your WiFi signal. If possible, try to position your WiFi router in the center of your house, away from these appliances, to maximise WiFi coverage. You might also want to consider relocating your smart devices to ensure optimal WiFi reception.

Then, there’s the one thing you can’t work around – your walls. Some houses and apartments have walls that are not only thick, but have water pipes and the likes running through them which will affect your WiFi signal. In these cases, you can try a WiFi repeater that will help amplify your signal and extend your coverage.

3. Multiple devices connected at the same time

We’ve mentioned this earlier, the number of devices simultaneously connected to your Wi-Fi network can seriously impact the maximum speeds you experience. As an example, a 100Mbps connection can support up to 6 connected devices before you start experiencing connectivity issues.

This is because the more devices you have connected, the smaller the bandwidth allocated to each individual device will be. Imagine a pizza party with 8 guests versus one with 16 guests. In the latter, everyone will only get half a slice of the same pizza. So, really think about how you’re going to use the Internet when choosing a plan to subscribe to. If you have a huge family and everyone has their handphone, laptop or security system hooked up to the Internet, a plan like the TIME Fibre Home Broadband 500Mbps plan may be a better fit.

4. Using older devices

We’ve looked at a couple of factors now but it’s time to look at what’s within reach of your own fingertips. Literally. The device you’re holding in your hands will affect the speeds you experience. Realistically, you can’t experience 100Mbps speed on a device that’s 5 years old. Devices from back then were simply not built to support the kind of speeds we’re used to seeing now. To fully enjoy the speeds being offered, devices need to be compatible with the latest WiFi standards. You now have an excuse to go get that smartphone you’ve been eyeing. No need to thank us.

5. Speed tiers and plans offered

Finally, you really need to think about how you’ll be using the Internet and pick a plan that suits your needs. Ask yourself these questions:

- What kind of user are you? - light or heavy?

- What are you using the Internet for? You want to send a couple of emails? Perhaps you’re a heavy gamer or love watching your TV shows 24/7. Different needs require different speeds.

- How many devices will you be connecting to your WiFi network? Remember the pizza party? The more people and connected devices, the higher the bandwidth you’ll need.

Hopefully, this helps you to identify why your Internet experience hasn’t been ideal and you’re able to improve your experience with the tips above. If you found this helpful and want to read more, check out the TIME Blog for expert advice.

If only Time is available for the Landed houses. =(

I hope Malaysia will play catch up with the rest of the region, in terms of broadbank internet speeds.

The internet service provider will need to upgrade all "ancient" land telephone infrastructure into fibre, in order for consumers to enjoy higher broadband speeds!

I really hope TIME can have coverage in more residential places :(  I think so far they are the best. Cheapest and the strongest and the most stable connectivity. But it's such a shame how they don't have coverage in most places.

Time better than Unifi?

I just hope TIME has coverage for the landed residence soon but not only high rise or corporate buildings. Hope they can gain some market share by getting into the landed residence. =(

@JohnL

By the way, does TIME lease the internet bandwidth from TM to offer its services?

Therefore, the bottleneck (if any) is at TM, not TIME?

@breeze Unifi right now is adopted by many(mainly landed), will affect speed on certain area. But Time is not available yet for landed properties ( mostly for condos).

@JohnL Yes, i'm waiting for that as well as i know Time is more stable overall compared to Unifi.

How about just use phone line's data at home? Share hotspot.

@Zara

If the mobile data speed is stable and unlimited, I really don't mind to share the hotspot. Definitely a big drain on the phone battery life!

TIME is still the best with the fastest bandwidth. Those I know who are using TIME have absolutely no complaints and love them. The only downside is not every location has TIME coverage. Such as shame, otherwise TIME is perfect.

A lot depends on Internet type(whether broadband, dial-up, wireless etc). Also, property type and location are the other factors.

Cabled internet connectivity is more stable and reliable than the wifi connectivity which gets interrupted quite easily.
