You have arrived at your nice, new home. What do you do now? Apart from unloading your packed boxes, here is a checklist for you to do when moving into a new house!

1. Change all the locks
You never know who has had the keys to your new home, so change all the lock to ensure yourself of who has access to your home. Install a new deadbolt yourself for a cheaper price or simply get a locksmith to help you out!

2. Inspect for plumbing leaks
You ought to have done this before buying the house, but there’s no harm to double-check. Keep an eye out for dripping faucets and running toilets. On top of that, check your water heater for signs of leaks as well.

Here’s a pro-tip: Jot down your water meter reading at the beginning and end of a two-hour window when no water is being used at all. If the reading is different, there is a leak somewhere in your home. Deal with the leak instantly when you spot it (do not wait any longer), because the drip-drip of water translates to a drip-drip of your money.

3. Install ceiling fans
Instead of only having air-conds, opt for ceiling fans as that will help you net a large savings. It is also a low-energy way to keep air flowing into your home. You will need this, especially in a hot country like Malaysia!

4. Locate the main water valve
.Locate the water valve - it could be located inside or outside of your house. Try and turn the knob until it’s off, no water should flow when you turn on any faucets in your house. Knowing where the main water valve is valuable information for whoever lives in the house, especially when you have a plumbing emergency or when you are going out of town.

5. Install window treatments - curtains, blinds, etc
This may be last in the list (though the list is not ordered by priorities), but installing window treatments is a key part of settling in a new house. Dress all the windows in your new house (if you do not have the time to do all of them, at least do it for the main rooms). When night falls, you do not want your belongings to be visible for passerbys to see.
