About Bandar Utama Development Sdn Bhd

The origins of the See Hoy Chan Holdings Group and its member groups, Bandar Utama City Corporation Group and First Nationwide Group, are better understood by scrolling down the past decades, starting with the name ‘See Hoy Chan’ or literally mean ‘a warehouse full of wealth across the four seas’ in English.

The late Dato’ Teo Hang Sam (1897-1965), the founder of See Hoy Chan Group (picture below) , was a young man with a big dream when he left Guangdong province in China for Malaya in 1928. He dreamt of establishing "a warehouse full of wealth across the four seas". He first peddled in groceries and then went on to open a stall selling eggs in Kuala Lumpur. During the pre-war year of 1938, he founded See Hoy Chan when he set up a sundry store in Kuala Lumpur.

From the humble beginnings of a sundry store, he then ventured into import and distribution of rice, sugar, flour and other household staples and these businesses, ironically, flourished during the Japanese occupation of Malaya. With thrift and hard work, he expanded his business interests beyond the shores of Malaya to Burma, Thailand and Singapore. His nickname ‘Rice King of Malaya’ said it all.

In 1960s, he ventured into rubber plantations and later diversified his business interests to include property development, insurance and the rest is history.

The late Dato’ Teo Hang Sam left behind his legacy in these businesses which were later amicably divided amongst his family. The name ‘See Hoy Chan’ is now a household name associated with entrepreneurial excellence.
