Batu Uban is located in the heart of eastern Penang island, close to Gelugor. Upon exiting the Penang bridge from the mainland, Batu Uban is just a short distance on the left of the bridge, with a few of the high rise residences within the vicinity clearly visible as one approaches the island.
Batu Uban is believed to be one of the earliest settlements on the island, with its origins dating back to even before Francis Light’s arrival to Penang. To date, remnants of the traditional Malay village can still be found in the area, though Batu Uban, like other parts of Penang, is not spared by urbanization.
The skyline of Batu Uban is now lined with several towering residences, with older properties like Sunny Ville, N-Park, and E-Park. Newer residences like the View condominiums, which many have dubbed “the Penang twin towers”, is one of the first few luxury condominium residences in the area, with many following suit.
Batu Uban’s strategic location close to the first Penang bridge, Georgetown, Bayan Lepas and its seaside placement has made it a favourable spot and thus, the attention of many developers. Future developments are also going along the luxurious line such as U1 @ Batu Uban, a condominium project and Velaris, a gated and guarded community of 3-storey terraces.
Amenities in and around Batu Uban are aplenty, and distances to other major shopping complexes and hypermarkets around the area are also very short. Tesco Extra and Tesco Penang are both minutes away from Batu Uban while Queensbay mall is also nearby. There is also a number of schools around the area, such as secondary schools, SK Sungai Gelugor, SMJK (C) Phor Tay, Chinese primary schools, Kwang Hwa Primary School, SRJK (C) Keong Hoe located in Sungai Dua and Shih Chung (Primary) Branch School in Sungai Nibong.
On another note, residents in the area may have to travel a short distance should they require any serious medical attention as the nearest hospitals are the Lam Wah Ee Hospital in Georgetown, and the Pantai Hospital in Bayan Lepas, which are both similarly around 15 minutes away. Batu Uban is within close proximity to many major roads such as Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah and the Tun Dr. Lim Chong Eu Expressway, making Batu Uban ideally close to both Bayan Lepas and Georgetown.
Not to mention, access to the mainland is also made easy with its location close to the first Penang bridge. These factors enable Batu Uban to be extremely accessible to and from other parts of the island and the mainland. However, this ease of access is also a double-edged sword, as traffic may be heavy during the daily peak hours and weekends.
