It's rare these days for houses to be built as large or as spacious as they used to be. Contemporary homes tend to maximise the use of space, leaving little extra room anywhere. For this reason, whether you're living in an apartment or landed property, you need a way to create larger spaces by having less partitions or rather, more flexible ones that can be removed or restored according to your needs.

Partitioning a room with something other than a solid wall has many benefits, as it allows you the choice and flexibility whether to open it up for a more spacious area, or close it off for more privacy. Here are several flexible partitions that will look lovely in any home.

1. Foldable screens

Foldable screens are extremely easy to manage, as most of them are made of lightweight material. Find one that's made of bamboo, rattan, fabric and other natural products so that they'll add a touch of freshness to your home. It helps to get one with non-metallic wheels so that you don't have to risk scratching your floor when you drag it across the room.

2. Bookshelves or shelves

Bookshelves are a great way to create 'borders' between one part of the home to another without actually cutting these rooms off from one another. Bookshelves also function as a semi-wall which allows you to creatively use books and other decorative items to create a 'semi-wall' which is less imposing than a full and solid partition.

3. Divider curtains

Curtains lend a sort of rustic charm to any house, and it can offer full privacy, without being permanent. Choose curtains that are bright and slightly transparent to lend a sense of light and fluid charm to your home, rather than bulky blackout curtains.

4. Modern Japanese sliding doors

The Japanese were one of the first ones to invent the concept of flexible spaces, and they depended on sliding doors that could be opened and closed at any time. Japanese style sliding doors are great as they allow the light in and function as a diffuser.

5. Wooden pallets

Using wood to create a 'breathable' partition will lend your home an airy feeling, while still allowing a distinction of spaces and functions. You can also get creative and choose the level of visibility your wooden partition. In fact, you can even construct your own partition with recycled wood.

6. Plants

It's always a good idea to bring a little of the outdoors into your home. Plants can be turned into partitions for your home in a few ways. You can bring them in planted in pots which you can arrange in a straight line or on shelves, or even install a place for creepers to grow.

7. Ribbons, ropes and beads

Bring a bit of the 1960s into your home with some hippie inspired ribbons, beads or ropes made of fabric. Make sure they're authentic and fun. This is probably one of the more affordable ways to divide up the room and is great if you love something completely different.

Now that you know how creative you can get with partitions, you can start planning what types you want and where. If you need help with curtain installations or any renovations at all, just make a request and you'll be met with our gifted pool of home interior service providers at the best price possible.
