KUALA LUMPUR (June 27, 2018): Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and Think City is collaborating to pilot laneway improvement program covering nine laneways within the historic core of Kuala Lumpur.

Aiming to create safe, functional, and attractive laneways for the benefit of local stakeholders and pedestrians, the laneway improvement programme idea was initially introduced in September 2017.

Kicking off with the ground breaking ceremony at Lorong 13, the other selected laneways are Lorong Lebuh Ampang, Lorong Hang Lekiu, Lorong Tun HS Lee South, Lorong Yap Ah Loy, Lorong Pudu, Lorong Tun Tan Cheng Lock, and Lorong Hang Kasturi South.

Think City’s Programme Director, Dr. Neil Khor stated that “the laneways were selected based on current condition of the space, connectivity and potential to improve existing uses by local stakeholders. This is ultimately to enhance the vibrancy of Kuala Lumpur through functional and creative spaces that facilitates pedestrian traffic, showcases good environment friendly practices and deters indecent behaviour through design”.

Also present at the ceremony, DBKL Project Management Executive Director, Datuk Mahadi Che Ngah agreeing by saying that “the urban revitalisation of these lanes would allow citizens to enjoy these public spaces.”

He also adds that “there are limited available space in Kuala Lumpur now so we cannot afford to waste anymore available space in the city.”

Officiating the event, Bukit Bintang MP, Fong Kui Lun said that the programme will promote new tourism activity with a better city environment.

The laneway upgrade program would involve active community engagement in order to solve issues such as random waste disposal, lack of lighting, uneven pavement and potholes as well as illegal parking. Previously, Lorong Bandar 13 laneway was also used by drug addicts and homeless people as a place for refuge.

“We will continue to leverage meaningful community engagement to come up with customised solutions, drawing feedback and aspirations of local stakeholders for physical upgrading works coupled with social and economic improvements,” Khor added.
