Cheras is one of the most mature communities within the federal territory of Kuala Lumpur. As such, its residents are spoilt for choice when it comes to eateries and restaurants.

If you don’t want to experience having dinner at so-so or even downright horrible restos in the area, we suggest looking up our list of the top dinner places in Cheras. Their signature dishes include Korean fried chicken, European meatballs, Spain’s Iberico Pork, exceptionally good Tom Yam soup, and traditional Malaysian food served with a modern flair.


I. KyoChon 1991

Located on the ground floor of the MyTOWN Shopping Centre, this restaurant is famous for their mouth-watering Korean fried chicken. While this restaurant is readily available in many malls in the Klang Valley, it is nevertheless one of the most popular spots in Cheras for Korean fried chicken.

In fact, the spot is often crowded and with long queues of people who want to enjoy the delectable dish, which comes in four kinds of flavour -- Soy Garlic, Red Pepper, Honey and Salsal.

However, the restaurant is on the expensive side. A regular bucket of chicken wingette and drumette (8 pcs) costs about RM18.50, a medium bucket (12 pcs) is priced at RM26.90, while the large one (20 pcs) will set you back for RM43.90. Nevertheless, this pork-free restaurant is worth the price.


II. IKEA Restaurant Cheras

Apart from running a world-class furniture chain, IKEA also operates a popular dinner spot along Jalan Cochrane in Taman Maluri. Expect throngs of people there, who don’t mind the masses just to taste IKEA’s iconic Swedish Meatballs (beef) in white sauce with mashed potatoes. The more you order, the cheaper the meatballs get – RM6 for 5pcs, RM12 for 10pcs, RM15 for 15 pcs and RM18 for 20pcs.

If you prefer healthier alternatives, try their veggie balls with couscous and sambal. Another sought-after dish is their chicken leg with lemon dill sauce and the rich chocolate croissant. The restaurant is also child-friendly – they offer free baby food for any purchase of a meal for adults.


III. Ahroy Thai Cuisine

Located in Jalan Manis 1 at Taman Segar, this pork-free restaurant specialises in authentic dishes originating from the Land of Smiles, Thailand. Among their must-try food is their flavourful and aromatic Tom Yam soup. The dish comes in three varieties – seafood (red or white broth), chicken and prawn. You can order three sizes – small, medium and large, with prices ranging from RM28 to RM58.

The establishment’s other well-liked dishes include their colourful mango salad, Pad Thai and pineapple fried rice, as well as their tasty buttered soft-shell crab, spicy cockles with basil and stir fried squid covered in salted egg sauce.


IV. Anne Elizabeth The Deli Restaurant

Sited at Jalan Manis 4 in Taman Segar, this prominent dinner spot near the aforementioned Thai resto is a haven for those fond of eating pork. Their top selling dishes are Spain’s famed Iberico Pork, bratwurst, pork belly, spicy Italian Sausage and another piquant banger stuffed with pork and cheese. Just choose your desired meat from their counter, and select the cooking method.

The restaurant also serves excellent Italian cuisine, such as their signature creamy carbonara and the Spaghetti aglio e olio, which is al dente and garlicky. However, the place is on the small side and there is a limited number of dishes you can order. Nevertheless, expect a wonderful meaty treat.


V. Chapathi Recipes

This place in Jalan Menara Gading 1, Taman Connaught is touted as the best Indian restaurant in Cheras. Specifically, this is the place to be if you’re yearning for butter chicken and freshly-baked naan bread with garlic and cheese. Some people even claim that they serve the most delicious naan in all of Kuala Lumpur.

In fact, there are lots of frequent diners there during peak hours. Chapathi Recipes’ other notable dishes include their fiery chicken karahi, the aromatic Tandoori chicken, fried rice and various curries. Apart from the generous serving size, the spiciness of the food is just about right.


VI. Timeline Café and Bistro

This café along Jalan Dataran Cheras has become renowned for consistently serving fresh food cooked with love. Their popular dishes include crisp fish and chips, steaks with fries, as well as mushroom soup. You can tell that the soup doesn’t come from a can.

They also offer flaky salmon steak, plus tender and juicy beef steaks, which is competitively priced compared to other high-end steakhouses in KL. Theirs costs RM34.80, while top restaurants elsewhere in the city charge at least RM60. The portions of their dishes are also large and the price is reasonable, considering the high-end ingredients added. For instance, the mushroom soup and French fries come with truffle oil.


VII. SukaSucre Bistro

Helmed by famous chef Dato’ Fazley Yaakob, this restaurant in Tamam Pertama has earned a reputation for serving fantastic modern Malay cuisine. Apart from being so yummy, the dishes are elegantly presented, making them edible pieces of art. Their top Malaysian dishes include Dulang Minang, pasta Daging Salai Lemak with chili, bakso meatballs, and salted egg yolk chicken pasta.

The establishment also offers terrific western dishes like French-style chicken. In addition, their dessert selection doesn’t disappoint, from chocolate cake, an assortment of macarons, cheese cakes, crème brûlée and cookies with ice cream.


VIII. Steamboat Factory

Situated along Jalan Desa Aman 2, the Steamboat Factory is reputed to be the finest Chinese hotpot place in Cheras. Customers love the huge variety of steamboat items including fresh seafood, their large serving size and affordable price, in addition to their six different kinds of soup bases.

Patrons recommend their signature soups: pork bone soup, wolfberry clam ginger soup and another one with pig stomach. Another favourite is their smoky barbequed pork belly as well as their steamed sets. There is a combo comprising scallops, clams and live prawns. Another one excludes clams, but features dragon grouper instead.


IX. Susan's Bistro

This place along Jalan Temenggung in Bandar Mahkota is lauded as one of the best Italian restaurants in Cheras. Unsurprisingly, it’s often bustling with diners who want to sample their impressive and creative dishes. Their most popular dish is their succulent Italian roasted chicken is drizzled with strong tasting blue cheese sauce.

Other must-try dishes include their tender lamb shanks and thick soups made from mushroom and pumpkin, as well as their juicy Thai chicken glazed with honey. They also serve a large assortment of delectable pasta, where their pesto pasta is made from scratch, with fresh basil leaves and European pine nuts.
