If your desire is to live in the heart of the action, Bukit Bintang is the place to be. It is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city, which also happens to be home to the first-ever McDonald’s in Malaysia. Having evolved much from that single achievement, Bukit Bintang now also touts some of the best nightclubs, shopping malls, and city lifestyle.

As the neighbourhood is not particularly sizeable, residents of this neighbourhood will be within a short walk of a Monorail, MRT, and LRT station. But such is this neighbourhood’s popularity that getting a Grabcar will be effortless – at all times of the day.

Budget-wise, this neighbourhood’s properties are pricey only if you are aiming to purchase one. Purchasing one will however be a great investment, as you will never be short of tenants. If you are however looking at just renting one, there is a temporary home for all walks of lives, be it a hostel, hotel, or apartment. The price can range from ridiculously affordable to insanely expensive, depending on what you seek.

Here are some of the things you can look forward to when staying in Bukit Bintang:

- Jalan Alor: The food street that doesn’t disappoint with its variety of local delights and desserts
- Changkat: The nightlife area just a few metres from Jalan Alor with its many alfresco pubs frequented by expatriates
- Lowyat Plaza: Cheap and authentic electronics in Malaysia’s biggest IT mall!
- TREC: This is where all the best clubs in the city are. Visit on a weekday to absorb the peaceful ambience, and on a weekend weekend to dance your heart out to the variety of music selection

Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC)

Better known as KLCC to the locals, the Kuala Lumpur City Centre is another favourite of expatriates to live in. Located just next to Bukit Bintang, KLCC is, if anything, even more hectic than its neighbour. But the hecticness only means even more access to everything you need – from embassies to international cuisines and world-class shopping centres.

KLCC is only 120,000 m2 in size, which is comparatively small when compared to the metropolis of other countries. This is however a case where size does not matter, as it totally makes up for what it lacks in size with what it offers. The top hotels in the country are located within KLCC, and expatriates love staying here for the convenience of transportation it offers. There is easy access to MRT, LRT, and monorail stations if you stay in the heart of the Kuala Lumpur, and getting a Grabcar at all times of the day is effortless too.

The highlight of this neighbourhood is however Suria KLCC, the international standard shopping mall. This is the mall that carries all the top brands in the country, and is frequented most by expatriates looking for great deals on branded items.

The pride of Malaysia, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra is also located within Suria KLCC. Other highlights of this mall is the sizeable bookstore KinoKuniya, which overlooks the KLCC lake and its fountains. Three times a day there will be a Symphony Lake Water Show that lasts for 5 minutes each time. Graced with flowing music and flashing lights, the dancing fountain is a beautiful sight to behold every time.

Besides hanging out at Suria KLCC, here are some of the other stuff you can look forward to when staying in the city centre of Kuala Lumpur:

Petronas Twin Towers: Another tourist attraction that pulls in millions of visitors on a yearly basis, the Petronas Twin Towers is the focal point of many fine dining restaurants in the city
Aquaria KLCC: The aquarium with a main focus on its 90-metre underwater tunnel is a favourite of families with children
Petrosains Technology Museum: Also located within Suria KLCC, parents delight in bringing their children here to open their eyes to the wonders of science

KL Sentral

While still considered to be a part of Kuala Lumpur, KL Sentral is considered by some to be located on the fringe of the city centre. The homes here are for those who desire a life close to the city, yet would prefer a little less hecticness in their everyday life.

A major perk of living within KL Sentral is that it is the main hub of public transportation within Kuala Lumpur – meaning that you can get a direct train or bus to practically all parts of Malaysia.

There is the monorail that connects pedestrians to other states like Seremban and Penang. Then there is the LRT line as well which is great for travel within the city, as well as the MRT line that connects to the outer reaches of the suburbs. The Express Rail Link (ERL) to Putrajaya and the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is also located within KL Sentral, making it a decent home for frequent travellers.

And for any corner of the city that is not covered by a train line, there are the many busses that pass through KL Sentral. As expected with its seamless access to public transportation within this neighbourhood, travel to the city centre is effortless as well.

There is much entertainment that can be found within KL Sentral, including its short distance to the KL Bird Park, Botanical Gardens and Lake Garden. The latter two are favourites of joggers, while the KL Bird Park is a favourite of locals and tourists alike, whether for a date with a sweetheart or for a family outing.

And only a 10-minute walk from the heart of KL Sentral is Little India, a place where you can find great traditional Indian clothing, northern and southern India cuisine, as well as eyebrow threading, henna art, and household decorative items. With its network of public transportation being its main focal point, KL Sentral is hence also home to some of the top hotels in the country such as The Majestic Hotel, and St. Regis.

Aside from the above-mentioned attractions, KL Sentral also boasts proximity to a couple of other attractions including:

KL Butterfly Park: It is known that butterflies hibernate when it is cold and only come out to play when the sun is shining bright, which makes Kuala Lumpur the perfect place to have a butterfly park
National Museum: There is no better place to learn of Malaysia’s history than the National Museum
Rent-a-bike: If you get tired of taking the public transportation and want to get more on-the-ground within the city, you can always rent a bike to cycle around
