Our bedroom is one of the spaces where we spend most of our time when we are home. On average, we spend about one-third of our lifetime in the bedroom, estimated on an 8-hourly sleep basis.

It is for this reason that your bedroom floor is an important component of your room whether you realise it or not. You want it to feel comfy on your feet when you step barefoot on it first thing in the morning. The flooring also has to be durable, easy to clean, and easy to maintain.

Seeing the importance of a bedroom floor is as innocuous as it may seem, in this article we have compiled 5 of the best flooring materials in no particular order, which you can get for your bedroom.

Parquet Flooring

Parquet is one of the most popular flooring materials for the bedroom. It is a form of hardwood, and it remains warm when the air-conditioner is turned on. Parquet gives the bedroom a warm ambience, and is very appealing to the aesthetic senses.

Pros

The major perks of having parquet flooring for your room is definitely in having a comfortable floor to step on in the morning. The material is also easy to clean and has a timeless design. This will mean less stress about having to update your room’s aesthetics every few years. On top of that, parquet will add value to your property as it is a pricey material.

Cons

Parquet does however come with some bad points too. As wood is the staple diet of termites, you will need to ensure that your termite treatment plan is always up to date. Otherwise, you may one day find that your floor has been eaten from the inside out.

Parquet flooring is also easy to dent should you drop heavy objects on it, and it is also susceptible to scratches. Also, should you have butterfingers, you will notice that the noise when you drop items onto a parquet floor is much more amplified as compared to if you dropped the same item onto a tiled floor.

Vinyl

Vinyl is another favourite option for bedroom flooring material. Vinyl is 100% synthetic and was designed to produce the aesthetics of hardwood flooring. It gives the room a warm ambience and classy look, and it is also warm on the feet on chilly mornings. Vinyl is also much easier on the pocket than parquet flooring. So what are the pros and cons of vinyl that might make you choose one over the other?

Pros

As mentioned above, vinyl is one of the much more affordable options. You can even buy vinyl flooring off e-commerce platforms like Shopee or Lazada and install it yourself. There are DIY versions of vinyl nowadays, which you can install directly over your current tile or porcelain flooring. It is easy to install and makes for a great COVID-19 lockdown home project.

Cons

Seeing as how affordable the vinyl material is, it then makes sense that there are some downsides to using vinyl. Vinyl does not have the solid and classy feel of hardwood, and it can sound rather “hollow” when you drop items on the floor. The material is also easily dented if you drop sharp objects on it. Also if you are looking to install vinyl over your existing tiled floor, you will need to ensure that the surface of the floor beneath is smooth otherwise there will be visible bumps or depressions.

Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring in the bedroom is another favourite of homeowners. The biggest difference between vinyl flooring and laminate flooring is that while vinyl is 100% synthetic, laminate flooring is not. The core of laminate flooring is wood byproducts held together by resins, and the surface area is covered by a solid layer of plastic printed to the buyer’s desired design.

Pros

A major perk of getting laminate flooring is that you can have your floor look like anything you like. You can have it look like ceramic, hardwood, or even cement. Laminate flooring is also a relatively easy DIY project, and although it is pricier than vinyl flooring, laminate flooring is still one of the more affordable options.

Cons

Unlike the vinyl material which is 100% synthetic, the insides of laminate flooring material is actual wood. This makes it susceptible to moisture and water damage. The aesthetics may also be affected as there may be a “fake” feeling to it, should you choose to have your laminate flooring look like tiles or cement.

Ceramic Tile Flooring

This option of bedroom flooring and the next option is generally preferred by the younger generation. These two options are usually unpopular with the older generation as they can get uncomfortably cold underfoot. The younger generation however favour the aesthetic ambience over the comfort.

Pros

There are major perks to having a ceramic tiled floor, and this includes the fact that ceramic tiles are highly durable. They don’t dent, and they can withstand some of the highest impacts. They don’t encounter moisture problems like wooden floor materials. Ceramic tiles and their counterparts are also incredibly easy to clean.

Cons

There are a couple of reasons why many people prefer not to have ceramic tiles as their bedroom floor – the first is as mentioned above, their cold temperature at all times of the day. The second reason is that tiles don’t exude the same kind of warmth as wood or their imitation products do, and most people prefer their bedrooms to have a warm and welcoming ambience.

Concrete Flooring

Concrete flooring is one of the rarer types of flooring for the bedrooms. A rarely used material for the bedroom floor, if used properly, concrete flooring can give the room a very rustic or upscale ambience. The floor can be polished to a shine, and in a properly themed room, it has the potential to look nicer than any form of wooden flooring.

Pros

Concrete is one of the most affordable materials after laminate and vinyl flooring. It is durable and is not susceptible to dirt and grime, and you won’t have to worry about dropping heavy items on the floor. Concrete is so hard that it is almost impossible to damage it, unless you drop something extremely heavy like a dumbbell. It is also easy to clean, and the only maintenance it requires is resealing or waxing every 9 months or so.

Cons

One of the concrete material’s biggest downfalls is also what makes it such a good material – its hardness. Because of the hardness of concrete, it can be a rather uncomfortable material to walk barefoot on. Also, do prepare for a big bruise if you happen to fall down as concrete will not absorb any impact at all. Another issue is maintenance – if you fail to reseal or re-wax your concrete floor regularly, it may begin to discolour and even crack.

Which Flooring Material Should You Choose for Your Bedroom?

When selecting a flooring material for your bedroom, you should always look at the theme of your bedroom first. The next thing is to be realistic about your budget and how much you are willing to spend.

Should you desire a more expensive option but do not see the point in spending so much, get either vinyl or laminate flooring. With these two options, you can choose any design you like. But if you like wood and have a budget to spend, do yourself a favour and splurge on a parquet floor – besides the aesthetics, it will also increase the value of your home.

On the other hand, if you want to create a design masterpiece of a bedroom, you can try looking into concrete flooring and see if it suits you.
