Pulau Tikus is one of the more popular districts among all the other townships on the island of Penang. It is a town which its name quite literally translates to ‘Mouse Island’ in English, and neighbours Georgetown to its southeast and Tanjung Tokong to the north. Part of the town also overlooks the famed sea views of the Penang Island.

Despite its name, Pulau Tikus is a suburb that caters to the upmarket and is famous for its sea views. It is a beautiful town, which the first prime minister of Malaysia, Tunku Abdul Rahman, spent his retirement years at. The road which his house was located on is named after him, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman.

Beautiful views aside, Pulau Tikus is famous for its food. Tourists and locals alike flock to this town for its gastronomic choices of food. Amongst some of the coffeeshops that have made it into tourist lists for food is the Sin Hwa Coffee Shop opposite the Pulau Tikus police station that sells great char kway teow, and the Kassim Mustafa nasi kandar shop.

Some of the favourite local haunts include the Pulau Tikus night market. The food that can be found here include curry mee, and they also serve an amazing ‘mua chee’, a dessert that can hardly be found outside of Penang. The other types of foodstuffs that can be found in Pulau Tikus is hokkien mee (prawn mee) and nasi lemak.

Its amazing array of food is the main attraction of Pulau Tikus. There are nevertheless a number of pre-war buildings that attract much attention such as the 195 years old Roman Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception. There are also a great number of heritage buildings and pre-war structures in this town.

Pulau Tikus is served by the main trunk road of Jalan Burma. Getting to Georgetown from this town will take only 15 minutes, while getting to Tanjung Tokong via Jalan Tanjung Tokong will take only 10 minutes. Through a decent network of road infrastructures, the Penang Bridge is only 20 minutes away in clear traffic, while the Penang International Airport is about 30 minutes away.
