Tangkak is a town located in the Tangkak District of Johor. It is also the principal town of the 242,142-acres district, which borders the state of Malacca along the Kesang River, northeast of Johor Bahru. The district was formerly known as Ledang District before 2015, which was separated from the Muar District in 2008, becoming the 10th district of Johor.


The origins of Tangkak can be traced back to the year of 1901, beginning at the foot of Gunung Ledang, the tallest mountain in Johor. The town is now home to a population of about 52,000 (as of 2015). Other major towns within the Tangkak District are Tanjung Agas, Bukit Gambir, Serom, Sagil, Kesang and Sungai Mati.

Being a matured town, there are a number of amenities within Tangkak, such as banks, eateries, mini markets, clinics, and schools, such as SK Ledang, SMK Ledang, SK Paya Mas, and SMK Seri Tangkak. Medical attention can also be sought at the many clinics around town, while the Tangkak District Hospital is also available for any serious medical needs.

Tangkak is accessible to and from other parts of Johor and the Malaysian peninsula via the North-South Expressway (NSE). Just up the NSE is the state of Malacca, with the city centre being an hour away, while the JB city centre is about 2 hours’ drive from Tangkak. Following that, the Federal Route 1 connects to Muar southwards, approximately 40 minutes away.

Consumer Price Index

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) line shows an increment in prices of essential goods on a yearly basis, while the Percentage Changes line shows the level of changes in price increments over the years. For example, a dip in the CPI line may indicate a low level of price increment as compared to the previous year while a surge in CPI line shows a high level of price increment as compared to the previous year.

The above graph shows 1.839% of price changes in essential goods such as rice, meat and tobacco between the years 2011 and 2012, while increasing in difference to 2.471% in 2013. Prices of essential goods then increasing to 3.525% in the year 2014 while surging by 2.957% in 2015.

While the prices of essential goods have shown a variation in the Percentage Changes, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) on the other hand indicates a reality of ever increasing prices in essential goods with increments between the years 2011 - 2015 at 102.7 in 2011, 105.2 in 2012, 107.8 in 2013, 111.6 in 2014, 114.9 in 2015.
