Sarikei District is an administrative district in Sarikei Division, Sarawak, Malaysia, covering an area of 985 square kilometres (380 sq mi). There has been a marginal growth of Sarikei District population of 1.33% from 1991 to 2000. Meanwhile, from 2000 to 2010, there is a marginal growth of 1.66%.

In July 2010, residents of Sarikei district staying in the rural areas felt a minor tremor in their homes but the cause of the tremor was not found. On 19 April 2019 at 5 am, residents staying at the similar area felt a greater degree of tremor which lasted for a few seconds. According to parameters provided by Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, there was an earthquake 27 km south of Sarikei town, with Richter scale of 3.8 with depth of 10 km. However, Sarawak branch of Malaysian Meteorological Department denied any earthquake happened in Sarikei.

Consumer Price Index

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) line shows an increment in prices of essential goods on a yearly basis, while the Percentage Changes line shows the level of changes in price increments over the years. For example, a dip in the CPI line may indicate a low level of price increment as compared to the previous year while a surge in CPI line shows a high level of price increment as compared to the previous year.

The above graph shows 1.754% of price changes in essential goods such as rice, meat and tobacco between the years 2011 and 2012, while increasing in difference to 1.916% in 2013. Prices of essential goods then increasing to 2.82% in the year 2014 while surging by 1.554% in 2015.

While the prices of essential goods have shown a variation in the Percentage Changes, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) on the other hand indicates a reality of ever increasing prices in essential goods with increments between the years 2011 - 2015 at 102.7 in 2011, 104.4 in 2012, 106.4 in 2013, 109.4 in 2014, 111.1 in 2015.
