Machang Bubok is a residential neighbourhood in Bukit Mertajam, on the Penang mainland. The freehold housing estate appears to have existed for quite some time, with many of the older wooden houses with “atap” roofs still around. There are also many different types of houses which have been built throughout the years. Apart from single-storey and double-storey wooden semi-detached homes, there are also other bricked terraces, semi-detached homes and bungalows, with some at 3 storeys tall. Many of the newer homes have been individually designed and built. Amenities within the densely populated neighbourhood of Machang Bubok include eateries, sundry shops and a SJK (C) Kay Sin. However, more modern commercial hubs have cropped up along Jalan Machang Bubok 1 and Jalan Kulim just beyond the peripheries of the neighbourhood. Supermarkets, mini markets, restaurants, bakeries, clinics, pharmacies, a surau and even an IPK College can be found housed within the many shop lots. Accessibility wise, Jalan Kulim connects Machang Bubok to the town centre of Bukit Mertajam just 15 minutes away. The town of Seberang Perai and the first Penang bridge on the other hand, are about 25 minutes’ drive away via the North-South Expressway (NSE).
